Roof spaces and plant – a new approach

Generally, roof spaces in food manufacturing facilities are not given much thought. At DDK, we consider them to be an additional process area that is critical to the building’s operation.

This unique approach means that we ensure there is full head height wherever possible to allow easy access and egress (no crawl spaces with confined space entry requirements). Emergency escape from roof voids is made straightforward through the use of illuminated tape, directional signage and emergency lighting.

We install walkways to all services in order to facilitate maintenance and ensure that the integrity of the insulated panels is not compromised. The electrical panels are close to the point of use, thus reducing the amount of cable required to run the facilities and minimising the fire risk. We even put end caps on the stud work to prevent head injuries.

The design of the roof space reduces the need for plant rooms and allows us to incorporate fire call points throughout the roof with sirens that are both visible and audible due to their high position.

Our Intelligent Construction methodology means that we always think outside the box and consider the practical operation of the building long after we have left the site.
